Android App Revenues Overtook iOS in 2014, Thanks to China

Earlier today, we reported that Apple’s App Store had enjoyed record revenues in Q2 2015, but according to data from Digi-Capital, Android apps actually made more money than iOS globally in 2014.

Traditionally, it has been the case that while Android has volume of downloads on its side, dollar value doesn’t necessarily follow. This is still true when comparing the iOS App Store against Google Play, but Google’s official store isn’t the only source of Android apps – particularly in China.

The four biggest home-grown app stores in China – Baidu, Qihoo 360, Tencent and Wandoujia – actually make up the majority of app downloads globally, as shown in the above pie chart.

Even combined, these app stores pull in less revenue than their Western cousins, especially iOS, but they helped push Android to the top spot in 2014, the first time apps on Google’s OS have made more money than iOS.
