Carmaker Daimler, the parent company of Mercedez-Benz, has partnered with mobile tech firm Qualcomm to explore the possibility of wireless charging for mobile phones in car, as well as other electric and connected car technologies.

The announcement comes as multiple car manufacturers including rival firms BMW and Audi aim to expand their expertise in software and telecommunications through partnerships or in-house development, building a reputation as high-tech carmakers.

The first stage of the collaboration will focus on mobile technologies that enhance in-car experiences and vehicle performance, including improved connectivity within cars and wireless charging technology incorporated into car designs.

In addition, the firms are teaming up to implement Qualcomm’s Halo WEVC (wireless electric vehicle charging) solution in Daimler’s vehciles, enabling drivers to charge electric and hybrid vehicles without the need to plug them in.

“It’s important that we remain on the cutting edge of technology and continue to deliver unparalleled experiences to our customers,” said Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler responsible for group research and Mercedes-Benz car development.
