Facebook will be Mostly Video in Five Years, says Zuckerberg

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes the social network will be dominated by video content within five years, he revealed during the company’s first community town hall meeting.

During the meeting, where he took questions from the general public on a wide range of topics, he responded to a question on whether or not the growing number of photos on Facebook were placing a drag on its infrastructure.

According to Zuckerberg, the company’s data centres are sufficient to cope with the growing number of images uploaded, but the real challenge will be improving the infrastructure to allow more rich media on people’s feeds. “In five years, most of [Facebook] will be video,” said Zuckerberg, according to Network World.

He also addressed the creation of the Facebook Messenger app, which removed the messaging function from the core Facebook app.

“Asking everyone in our community to install another app is a big ask. I appreciate that that was work and required friction,” said Zuckerberg. “We wanted to do this because we believe that this is a better experience. Messaging is becoming increasingly important. On mobile, each app can only focus on doing one thing well, we think.”
