Shipment Targets Halved for Apple Phone due to Screen Issues

Apple is to cut its shipment targets for the Apple Watch in half, dropping from between 2.5m and 3m units to 1.25m to 1.5m, due to issues regarding the production of the AMOLED display panels used for the screen.

According to Taiwanese publication UDN Mobile, sources in Apple’s supply chain are claiming that the screens, which would mark a departure from Apple’s typical LCD iPhone displays, have been slow to produce.

Apple has not officially confirmed what screen technology will be used with the Apple Watch, but the adoption of AMOLED would be a first for the company. The two screen types display colours differently, with AMOLED offering wider contrast ratios but less realistic colours, which for the Apple Watch’s small screen would not be as much of an issue.

Apple Watch will launch on 24 April, with pre-orders commencing on 10 April. Apple has predicted the device, its first venture into wearable technology, will see 25m sales in the first 18 months but rumours of very short battery life and questions over the strength of the use case have dogged the product ahead of its launch.
